World-renowned tire-manufacturer Yokohama and Walkenhorst Motorsport are ready for a special edition of the Nürburgring 24 hours. Not only will the 2022 race mark the 50th edition of the “Green Hell” classic, it will also be the first time since 2019 that fans can attend the race without restrictions. The race, which features 137 race cars from around the world, is set to start at 16:00 local time on Saturday, May 28th, with the first practice sessions starting as early as 12:30 on Thursday, May 26th.

Walkenhorst Motorsport fields three of the brand-new BMW M4 GT3 into the race. The new race car has proven itself in the two races of the Nürburgring Endurance Series and the Nürburgring 24 hours Qualifiers earlier this month, scoring a race win, two pole positions and four more podium finishes, one of these courtesy of Walkenhorst Motorsport at the second NLS race.

The Yokohama-liveried BMW #101 will lead the charge for Walkenhorst Motorsport, featuring a full-Pro-lineup with former NLS track record holder Christian Krognes, Andy Soucek, Sami-Matti Trogen and former BMW works driver Jörg Müller. The quartet is aiming for a podium finish to further extend the legacy of both the team and Yokohama at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.

Two more BMW M4 GT3 run by Walkenhorst Motorsport are set to tackle the 50th edition of the Nürburgring 24 hours. Both the #100 BMW with team owner Henry Walkenhorst, Friedrich von Bohlen, Christoph Breuer and Andreas Ziegler, and the #102 entry featuring Jörg Müller, Mario von Bohlen, Ben Tuck and Jörn Schmidt-Staade are set to start the race in the SP9 Pro-Am class, aiming for a podium finish in the sub-category as well.

All three cars feature the latest-spec Yokohama Advan Racing Slick and Rain tires. For the first time, the maximum number of tires has been capped to 29 sets for all sessions, paving the road to a more sustainable 24 hour race in the future. Currently, the weather forecast is predicting rain showers for the race with temperatures falling as low as 5°C at nighttime, adding to the grueling challenge of the race.

After two years of being held under heavy restrictions due to the Global pandemic, the race is set to welcome back more than 200,000 spectators around the 25.378 kilometers long racetrack in the Eifel mountains. Along with the spectators the characteristic festival atmosphere is about to return once more to the race, making the 50th edition a “true” Eifel classic.

DRIVER VOICE

Henry Walkenhorst [team owner and driver Walkenhorst Motorsport]

“We are looking forward to the 50th edition of the Nürburgring 24 hours. Of course, we are more than happy to welcome back more than 200,000 spectators at the track who will cheer on our three Yokohama-shod BMW M4 GT3. We want to be right at the front of the SP9 Pro-Am category. Of course, we are aiming for a podium finish in the Pro class as well. Many things must come together to achieve a good finish at this race. Right now, it looks like the weather will provide a difficult challenge for everyone, but we are more than ready for it. All in all, we want to put up a fantastic show for the fans out there. They absolutely deserve it.”
